Another thing which I think hampers me in a way is sharing in progress snapshots. If it makes any sort of sense, knowing that someone else knows what I'm working on raises my own expectation of the work, and when it fails to reach that absurdly high mark I set for it, discouragement inevitably sets in.
"Keep it secret, keep it safe." Gandalf, yes, but the words do have a great deal of merit. As with religion (especially when one lives in an area where those who are free-thinking are outcasts), I'm going to try a new approach with my art. What we do when we put pen to paper is something intensely spiritual, and contrary to what art courses teach us, I'm going to start treating it as such.
We'll just have to see where divine inspiration takes us next. After it's done, of course.
